A. Glossary/Definition of Terms [Show Glossary]

The glossary contains a table of words and terms that are relevant to the field of Automation, Control and Instrumentation Engineering.

It is intended that automation and control professionals will use this glossary.

It was instigated as part of the LinuxPLC project. http://www.linuxplc.org.

It is intended that this index becomes interactive, with submissions for new entries or of alternative meanings for existing entries coming from the internet.

This version of the index is in plain ‘blockhead’ HTML. A future version may be implemented as a web database.

Format

Each entry in the glossary is in a standard format. This is suggested as follows.

Programmable Logic Controller/Programmable Controller [PLC/PC]

(see also Personal Computer(PC), DCS, SoftPLC)

A special kind of computer for use in industrial control applications.

An application program operates a number of field devices such as sensors and actuators. The program connects to the real world via input and output modules.

[IEC EN 61131 (1993)] [Mark Hutton] [IEC, PLCOpen, LinuxPLC]

As can be seen from the above example the source field is where the definition came from, the source could be (concievably) the same as the submitted by field. The submitted by field contains a mailto link (if supplied) to the person who contributed the definition. The more info field contains links to other sources of information (if supplied), relating to the word or term. Links can be used within the definition to allow for clarification.

The glossary can be accessed by single page or via a three frame index.
